Why do my hands randomly fall asleep?

Lately, my hands have randomly been falling asleep or going numb. I’ll just be in class working on a test or just sitting there and they will just fall asleep. It’s not like I’m resting my head on my arms or sitting on my hands or something, I’ll just sit there like I usually do and it will happen. The other night I had a nightmare and I woke up and my hands were numb. I wasn’t even laying on them. I don’t understand, does anyone know what this could mean? Or what I could do to stop it?, because it tends to be rather inconvinient. Thanks!

It depends on where your hand falls asleep. If it is on your pinkie and ring fingers side, it could be your Ulnar nerve, which is situated in your elbow and also known as your Funny bone.

A Professor warned me against sitting at a table with my elbows on a hard service. You should also not sit or sleep with bended arms, because this put strain on the Ulnar nerve. Changing our positions can keep our bodies healthy.

If your hands fall asleep next time, take note of your position and try to make a mental note not to do it in the future.

We can also stretch this nerve by pushing the elbow over (with the other hand) to your back across your shoulder, right next to your head. Do this for only 2 minutes per day to keep this nerve healthy.

Another reason your hands are falling asleep could be that you lack the vitamin B-12. You can pick up B-12 supplement pills at any drug store. Some foods high in B-12 include:

  • Clams
  • Oysters
  • Liver
  • Caviar
  • Fish
  • Beef
  • Lamb
  • Cheese
  • Eggs

Some conditions that have numbness of the hands as a symptom include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Panic attacks

If you are concerned, you can have your doctor test you for one of these conditions as well as vitamin deficiency.

thanks for the advice. my mom is a single mom with a real estate job and a nursing job that barely brings in enough money. on top of me and my brother, she takes care of her dad too. she’s always busy and she’s even trying to date again. I don’t want to take up anymore of her time. plus, she’s a complete paranoia. her mom and her baby brother died of cancer and she had cancer so she’s constantly worried everytime I get sick. I don’t want her to overreact. & I mostly drink orange juice, im lactose intolerant so oj is pretty much all I drink. I just really want to handle this without my mom finding out, hopefully it will just stop, its probably not a big deal anyway.

When I get anxiety or Asthma attacks my hands will tend to do that. it could be a lack of oxygen getting to your hands. if you really need em’ and it happens, just face them towards the ground and shake them while taking deep breaths.hah. and if your mom is a nurse, she might be able to help

Bad blood circulation. Do you wear any tight watches or wrist bands?

If that is not the case and there is something internally that is causing this drink orange juice. It will help with circulation by giving your capillary walls a boost.

Answer #5

Sounds to me like you have a problem with blood circulation. Why are you scared of telling your mom? Just tell her to make an appointment at the doctor for you to get it checked out.
