Why wouldn't some people want to get help for certain addictions?

Answer #1

Because they don’t see it as a problem?

Answer #2

When people shove it in their head, and they have kids that are concerned about them, wouldn’t that be a little hint that it’s some kind of problem?

Answer #3

Maybe because it’s not impacting their life in a negative way, or they simply don’t want to stop what they are doing.

Answer #4

Addicts will see something however they want to see it.. If they are really addicted to something, they won’t see the bigger picture..

Answer #5

Treu.

Answer #6

because the people think that the addictions help them survive. they literally feel like they need something to go on, and be a person and a working normal person. its just something that they think they need.

Answer #7

There are people who think what they are doing may not be a problem, or they feel they are in control, alcoholics often feel this way, and it sometimes takes a dramatic experience for them to realize they have a problem.

Answer #8

If you can convince them that the way they are living is a problem, then they will probably get help.. but it is very very difficult to do.

Answer #9

I think this is right on the money, I had a neighbor that did not seek help till his 6th DWI.

Answer #10

TY, 6 DWIs wow, he really could have kill someone.

Answer #11

It really takes hitting rock bottom for an addict to seek help. Im a recovering dr.ug addict myself. While i was using i wasnt so naive to believe i didnt have a problem, i thought it was hopeless and i couldnt change. Its actually rare for an addict to not know they have an addiction, they may not admit it, but deep down they know. I didnt seek help for years, regardless of being homeless, overdosing, stealing, and doing things i wont even mention to get a fix. I didnt seek help because i was afraid for one…detoxing is painful…extremely painful. Its alot easier to go out and score dru.gs than it is to stay sober. Sobriety takes work and commitment…and you fail every so often. Every addict back slides a couple of times and itt honestly makes you feel like you cant change…so some give up trying.

Answer #12

Here’s a better question. Why is the person engaging in the behavior (drinking, doing dr.ugs, compulsively shopping, gam.bling, etc…)? The reason they are engaging in the behavior is the reason they don’t want to get help. Because they’re left vulnerable and unprotected without their coping mechanisms. To them it’s a matter of life or death, they need whatever it is they’re addicted to. As for why it takes them so long to get help after getting in trouble or hurting others, because addicts are extremely good at lying to others and lying to themselves. The mental gymnastics most addicts are able to do is completely amazing. People will only get help when they decide that they are ready to change. Otherwise nothing will convince them. Not losing their kids, not getting arrested, not being in ja.il, nothing.

Answer #13

Because they simply arent ready, you cant make someone do something first they have to want it. Some people simply dont think they have a problem so they are going to be stubburned like that till they find it out for themselfs. Some people believe that they are way to addicted so there is no use to get help. And then some people just cant quit, the have simply gotten into something that is going to be with them for the rest of their lifes.
