What "triggers" eczema ?

I went to the doctors today and he told me I had eczema on my legs … Is it pasted through genes ? Because my uncle had eczema extremely bad

So … What triggers it ?

Answer #1

Eczema can be hereditary.

Here are some triggers and irritants of eczema:

-Soaps and detergents: Soaps and detergents remove the natural ‘oils’ from the skin. This tends to make the skin dry and itchy, and more sensitive to irritants.

Therefore, avoid soaps, bubble baths, etc, when you wash. Instead, use a thick emollient (moisturiser) as a soap substitute and add an emollient to the a bath or shower.

Make sure that you used perfume free soaps when washing your clothes. I get eczema (very mildly) when I use fabric softeners on my clothes

-Toiletries and perfumes.

Clothing:

Wear cotton clothes next to the skin rather than irritating fabrics such as wool. However, it is probably the smoothness of the material rather than the type of the material which helps.

-Temperature: Avoid getting too hot or too cold. Extremes of temperature and humidity may trigger a flare-up of eczema symptoms.

-Stress, habitual scratching and the ‘itch-scratch cycle’

Stress does not cause eczema. However, some people react to stress by ‘habit’ scratching. It is thought that scratching can make itch worse, which makes you want to scratch more, etc. This is called the ‘itch-scratch’ cycle and can make eczema worse. T

-Food sensitivity and eczema

The most common foods which trigger eczema symptoms in some people include: cow’s milk, eggs, soya, wheat, fish, and nuts.

-Pets can be a trigger.

-Other possible triggers: Other possible factors which may trigger symptoms, or make symptoms worse, include: pollens, moulds, pregnancy, and hormone changes before a period in women.

My child had bad eczema I took him to so many doctors who all said the same thing that your doctor told you. Then I was getting frustrated and went to a holistic doctor and they ran some tests and told me that my son was sensitive to milk, wheat and strawberries. So I cut these out of his diet and what do you know the eczema has been gone since April of 09. He also told me to use cetaphil face and body wash on him to bathe him but that I could use regular shampoo for his head and after he was done in the bath for me to put Eucerin body cream on him to hold in the moisture. he feels like a new born baby now!! Good luck!

Simply put, anything and everything can trigger it! I have it too, it’s a genetic thing that doesnt always show up if you have it and sometimes it shows up later in life. I didnt start getting it until I was like 15/16. Heat is what really does it for me, I dont really get it in the winter. Nothing has ever helped it go away except leaving it alone, I tried the creams and all that jazz, but none of it worked. =/
