Why does God want us to honor leaders?

Why does god want us to honer leaders?

Answer #1

I read rnealw’s answer as indicating we should evaluate and choose/support/pray for leaders with a good moral compass - no one could argue Bill Clinton was not a good choice in this respect - we must apply this to any leader, regardless of party affiliation - nowhere did he say ‘Democrats only’ - he could easily have said Mark Foley.

Answer #2

My understanding is we are to pray for our leaders - in this respect we are honoring their position that they may be used of God and His will done in the application of their duties…Hope this helps !!

Answer #3

Many Christians I know are willing to excuse any indescressions by Republicans but they see anything unsavory in a Democrats past as evidence that they are morally unfit to hold office <<< - not this Christian,a sin is a sin, is a sin and my vote will ALWAYS go for the individual with integrity and good morals regardless of party - in any election (national or local) that turns out to be a Democrat, I’m voting Democrat.

Answer #4

To me in the narrowly defined role as president Bill Clinton seemed to do an amazing job. He reduced the deficit several years in a row, he made our government more efficient, we had the largest economic expansion ever. In spite of all of this many people hate his guts. Yes he did have some affairs and he was involved in a questionable land deal a decade earlier but every other president I can think of except perhaps Jimmy Carter had a lot of skeletins in their closet as well. Many Christians I know are willing to excuse any indescressions by Republicans but they see anything unsavory in a Democrats past as evidence that they are morally unfit to hold office. Ollie North sold ran crack cocaine to raise money to fund an unconstitional and illegal war yet he is the darling of the right. Newt Gingrich was having an affair at the same time he was pushing for Bill Clinton to be impeached over his affair with Monica Lewinsky yet Gingrich seems to have come out untarnished.

If modern Christians are going to use the divine right of kings to justify honoring one flawed leader than they should also apply it to other leaders.

Answer #5

Also, keep in mind God was made up by the human imagination for explanations.

Answer #6

We need to get back to the original question people Why does god want us to honer leaders? If everyone else will try to stop hijacking question all try also.

Answer #7

rnealw, I’m trying to understand. God want’s Christians to honor their leaders unless they are Democrats right?

Is there a Biblical foundation to your claim that God wants Christians to be active in the choice of political leaders.

Answer #8

Keep in mind that for almost all of human history, religion and the state were really the same thing. If you were writing the holy books, wouldn’t you claim everyone was supposed to honor you as well?

Answer #9

The idea that Kings were chosen by and only accountable to God was the belief in the middle ages and is to refered to as the divine right of Kings.

Of course in a democracy power comes from citizens and in a republic leaders are chosen by citizens (the 2000 election notwithstanding). This turns the divine right of kings on its ear.

rnealw, do you believe that God granted power to all the world’s leaders, even the awful ones (Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Kadafi, etc)?

Answer #10

Yep it’s in the Scripture, Jesus said it to Pilot and we do not understand Gods purpose on so many things. The only way I know to discribe Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Kadafi, etc is God expects us to be Active in our choice of Leaders and Well We tend to make some bad Choices. . Like Bill Clinton.

Answer #11

Yes, to add to amblessed’s point, I heard from a right-wing Christian in Britian who voted Communist in one local election, because the Communist candidate was the only person addressing local issues with integrity.

Answer #12

There is no god, so your question is moot.

Answer #13

They would have no power if God did not give it to them so in Honoring them we Honor God. .

Answer #14

Good for you amblessed. I hate it when people have a double standard.
