I see the point of your question, but I’m not sure who these other countries are that US forces are helping to defend from illegal immigration. Germany still gets illegal immigrants despite the presence of massive numbers of American forces all over the country. More recently, Iraq still has people crossing its borders virtually unopposed in places.

I know illegal immigration is controversial in the US, but from the outside looking in, there are many advantages to it. Immigration continues to add new workers to the American labour force every year, workers that other industrialised countries are desperate for. And certain states’ industries would probably suffer without illegal immigrants, such as California agriculture. True, there is growing crime in some communities, and a country can’t simply have open borders. But I think the US would be worse off economically without at least some immigration, even illegal.

I did not say they did a good job.

Answer #5

Ha, fair enough :) But I don’t think it’s the US purpose in these countries to protect their borders. I think America put soldiers there for other reasons.

Answer #7

Me to, but I feel there is no reason for us to be over there.

Answer #8

Our system exploits illegal labor. Illegals have little recourse against being underpaid or forced to work in dangerous or degrading workplaces. While everyone bemoans illegal immigrants little will be done to stop it because industries are dependent on it. The US Dept of labor estimates that half to 2/3 of agriculture workers are illegal. While illegal workers often use fake documents only 2% of employers use a federal database to confirm eligibility. Many of the people who cook our restaurant meals, wash dishes, watch our children in day care, and take the worst slaughterhouse and factory jobs are illegal. Employers caught hiring illegal workers get little more than a slap on the wrist.

Our system does need to change. The best approach is to have real penalties for employers who hire illegal labor and to make it easier for honest hard working foreigners to become American citizens.

Answer #9

I do agree with you…my family went through the process of becoming US citizens although at the time it seemed easier to get US citizenship than in several other countries. But illegal immigrants have a much higher birth rate than American citizens; the Center for Immigration Studies has it at 3.5 children per family among just Mexican immigrants in the US. I think this will greatly help the US demographics in the long run.

Answer #10

Some in the US Congress would seem to agree with you. They are questioning the need for such a large American military presence in Europe. A renewed Cold War with Russia might provide them with a reason, but I can guarantee Germany will not want to spend another four decades being the potential battleground in a US-Russian shooting war. So the US will probably leave eventually.
