Is vegitarianism a sin?

I recently became a vegitarian…I’ve been told by my family that it’s a sin… Is that true?

Answer #1

Don’t let anyone push any beliefs on you. It’s not a sin. It’s a lifestyle.

Answer #2

Do they have anything to support their hilarious claims? Or is it just their opinion?

Answer #3

Certainly not.

Answer #4

G-d had created the animals to be eaten. But if you just dont like meat then he can not hold that against you. The only way it becomes a sin is when you place the life of an animal with the same regard as the life of a human.

Answer #5

“The only way it becomes a sin is when you place the life of an animal with the same regard as the life of a human. “

care to cite where you came up with that one?

Answer #6

According to Genesis in the Garden of Eden mankind was given every seed bearing plant and fruit to eat except that from the Tree of Knowledge. Later in Genesis after the great flood God gives the survivors everything that lives and moves to eat. Some Christian vegetarians believe that now that vegetation is again abundant that we should return to vegetarianism.

A lot of Christians associate vegetarianism with Eastern religions. When I was in college I had a roommate that was looking into Krishna Consciousness and when my parents learned that I became a vegetarian they thought he had converted me to Hare Krishna.

Answer #7

Before sin, we never even ate meat, so how can it be a sin? Even though God gave us animals to use for our needs, I don’t believe he would say not eating them is a sin, it never says we have to eat meat. Give me the reference.

Answer #8

I thin going veggie is actually one of the best things you could do. I’m hoping to go veggie when I’m older.

Answer #13

Lol thanx…Just needed some reassurance…My entire family’s against it because they say it says in the bible that man was meant to eat animal but I just…can’t…

Answer #14

No it isn’t a sin, it isn’t again any major religion that I know (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) etc.

I’m guessing your dad is only saying that because he might not want you to be one.

Answer #15

Let your family know that it is NOT a sin… and actually you will be healthier and feel better… they should try it

The sin would be in the way factory farms treat and abuse the animals before they are killed for consumption

Answer #16

All life should be respected… Remember tseirpeht… a community can be judged by the treatment of it’s animals

or do you think it is okay to torture animals before killing them for food

and I include kosher in that…

Answer #17

If your family is quoting the bible at you, you can just quote back.

In Genesis 1:26 what it says is that man was given DOMINION OVER the animals - in other words, was made to care for them and rule over them. Not eat them

In Genesis 1:29 , the Lord specifies ‘Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, and TO YOU IT SHALL BE FOR MEAT

Not a word about kiling animals and eating them.

Answer #18

no if your parents ohnestly beleive that, there being brainwashed by there own religion, vegetarianism is not a sin nither is quite a lot of the other “sins” bad most of the things they consider “sins” are harmless and just caused by people opinions, values and personal preferances

Answer #19

lol

“G-d had created the animals to be eaten. But if you just dont like meat then he can not hold that against you. The only way it becomes a sin is when you place the life of an animal with the same regard as the life of a human. “

You sick jew, he didn’t. And humans ARE animals, too. Besides you are killing them, and killing is a sin. Oh, and since when are you the one choosing what he should hold against you and what he shouldn’t?

Answer #20

Thanks for the advice…Now I have evidence to fight back against their stupid claims…

Answer #21

no it is not a sin and who tols you it was it is what you want it to be you can be a vegertarian and eat some meat as well I know a person who is or was and he ate little meat and lots of veges do not give up on it if that is what you want go for it do not let others put you down and tell you diffently.

Answer #22

If ‘G-d created animals to be eaten’ maybe he also created plants etc to be eaten. So no, I don’t think being veggie is a sin at all.

Answer #23

to. captainassassin…

Actually, the parents in question are using an argument that vegetarians often hear. It’s based on a wrong interpretation of Genesis (see my response above) where God grants to mankind ‘dominion’ over the animals. ‘Dominion’ of course means ‘sovereignty, rule’, and doesn’t include the right to kill and eat your sovereign subjects.

I first encountered this argument when teaching at what proved to be a missionary-oriented school in Africa, ages ago, when being vegetarian also smacked of being anarchistic, non-conformist and otherwise dangerous. I rather suspect that the argument is part of a dogma spread in certain Christian circles, because I’ve run into it frequently since then. At the time, I had no chance to check out that point, since the school soon found other grounds for firing me and I left in considerable haste.

Anyhow, now you are forewarned!
