Do you think the government should use Google Earth to enforce the laws?

I read in an article that I had to write a current event for class that the government may start using Google Earth to enforce the law Aerial View that is. What do you think about this?

In my view, that’s an invasion of the 1st Amendment (I think that’s the one) and they should stick to the original laws they have set right now. Sure it may help improve how they catch illegal activity, but they are using Google Earth for it’s wrong purpose.

Answer #1

How is it against the first amendment? That’s freedom of speech, religion, free press, and peaceful gatherings. The fourth amendment is freedom from unreasonable searches? Although I dont know if that would technically count. I think people who are breaking the law will simply become better at hiding it.

Answer #2

It’s like a police officer looking inside your window and accidentally finding you making crack :)

Answer #3

Do people make crack at home? I thought you had to buy it processed. Although I guess you can cut it at home. I thought meth was the only thing processed at home. That is obviously besides the point. Well, I dont see a problem with that. If you’re stupid enough not to have curtains, it’s your own fault.

Answer #4

Thinking of the 4th amendment? The one against unreasonable search and seizure? Kind of a gray area. The question comes down to if you have a reasonable expectation of privacy from aerial surveillance. Currently law enforcement generally does need a warrant or probable cause to fly over private property to investigate criminal activity. Seems like using aerial views from Google Earth would be similar but you could argue that now that Google Earth exists that we no longer have an expectation of privacy from aerial surveillance even on our own property.

Answer #5

The spirit behind the fourth amendment is that a person be secure in their property. It speaks to property rights… if innocent people are subject to an invasion of privacy by these fishing expeditions… they relinquish property rights to the state.

These rights have been eroding for some time. Random police searches at road blocks violate the 4th amendment… but we permit them because the state is very powerful. President Obama has expanded wiretapping violations.

We need an autocratic state to stamp out vague threats. If GI Joe taught us nothing else… we should know that the dastardly Cobra Commander is scheming up ways to rob us of our freedoms… so if we turn them over to a powerful state… we somehow win… though it seems to be a Pyrrhic victory… or the definition of idiocy.

Things could be/will be worse….
