Why are women only allowed to inherit a fraction of what men do under sharia law?

I keep thinking…this isn’t right. It’s in the books, it’s standard practice, and yet - it’s completely unfair. If any country wanted to start respecting women’s rights…shouldn’t they start with something as simple as issuing a fatwa that declares that children of both genders must inherit family property evenly? OR are people really so ignorant in every muslim society as to think that Allah really doesn’t want women to own property?

Answer #1

In agreement with Sharia law, women are judged to be secondary to men thus having fewer freedoms and obligations. A woman is considered equal to one-half of a male.

It cannot be changed because these beliefs were gleaned from the life of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet. Sharia is regarded as God’s law and cannot be altered or corrected as oppose to manmade law.

Answer #2

This is just a fraction and not as bad as all the other horrendous treatment of women under Sharia law.

Answer #3

Here are a few more:

Women don’t have an independence in picking out their clothing. It is thought that the concealment of the whole body except for the face and hands preserves morality and checks sexual chaos. In India under Sharia law on the assumption of guarding women’s honor, women are kept locked up, isolated and unable to enjoy a full life. This is called purdah in India.

Women cannot have any encounters with men that are not related to them without the presence of a male relative. The separation of the sexes make it hard to go out of their homes and to join society in any way at all. A female can not elect her husband, where she lives , or to journey where she pleases.

In various Islamic countries, women can only marry an Islamic man. Men are granted authority to wed non-Islamic women.

Females don’t have very much self-independence and are considered to require the safety of their sires, spouses, or masculine family members all through their existence. All behavior that weakens the image of male domination will pollute and soil the Sharia law.

Answer #4

correction: muslim men r also not allowed to marry a non-muslim.. but he can marry if the woman agrees to convert to islam.

Answer #5

Who has stated that they want to start respecting women’s rights? The men have total control, why would they want to start handing out rights to women? The inheritance law is hardly the biggest concern. Women cant go out on their own in certain places, they cannot claim to have been raped without witnesses, I mean they are secondary citizens. This all boils down to politics. Men have power and they dont want to give it up. They simply use religion as an excuse.

Answer #6

people tend to give a negetive image of Islam by describing it wrongly. Islam is not harsh it is fair. watch this video and u’ll know y women need to cover their whole body except face and hands. ( [link removed] ) Allah ( mislims God) says..” heaven lays in mothers feet” this is the respect Allah gave to mothers. n it is also said tht mums should b respected 3 times more then dads. there r places where men r given greater regard n there r places where women r give greater regard. as far as ur question is concerned SHARIAH LAW is never wrong…

Answer #7

@ben dont put a bad image of a religion if u dont know abt it.. there r muslims who r doing alot of things wrongly… Read Quran (muslims holy book) n u’ll find all the ans.. may Allah guide u to the right path..

Answer #8

Dude…you are SO confused, and you didn’t answer the !#$@#$ question :) Try explaining to us WHY what I suggested is wrong, in my question…start with that, please, before you go off on a tangent. I do realize that Pakistan, if it weren’t for donations from “christian” countries would be really suffering right now…perhaps your country is rejecting the money b/c it comes from places where Islam didn’t succeed with fire & sword in becoming the dominant religion?

And yes, Shariah law IS wrong…if your country is participating in the UN, you CAN’T chop off limbs (part of shariah law) and in the country I live, Imams recently found guilty via video of homosexual acts weren’t put to death…which is also the verdict that you would glean under Shariah law. So…please, buy a clue.

Answer #9

There was a video clip of an Imam I met, recently, from New York that said that many people confuse women’s rights under Islam…the suggestion of his talk and video was that somehow, Islam respects women’s rights. We know that’s not the case…but, the supposition that it DOES is interesting to me…because I find no evidence to support this among the muslim countries I’m familiar with.

Answer #10

Muslims do treat their woman like second class citizens. I have no problem if anyone wants to participate in it, but in some of your countries they even get hit if they wear pants. How on earth does not not put the religion in a bad light? How is that fair, why does having a v@gina make you a second class citizen.

Answer #23

I would wonder what rights he is talking about and in what countries (because this isnt a religious thing, it is a country thing, in large parts of Africa women dont really wear burkas, and many African countries recognize both religions fairly equally). I wonder if he is talking about dress codes and such especially in Western countries where most women actually choose to dress the way they do. And oddly enough there’s been this rebounding effect in the West where the younger generation has become more conservative than their parents who were trying to integrate when they first moved.
