Why is marijuana illegal?

Why? It’s not a bit more dangerous than cigarettes. I’m not a pothead. I’m just wondering.

Answer #1

where did you get your sources? actually a marijuana cigarette contains 5-10 times more carcinogens and chemicals compared to a regular filtered cigarette. if anyone else says that it’s not true, they are just saying it so they feel better about smoking the stuff. I’m not against it or anything like that, just stating the facts.

Answer #2

True, allecat. But a person who smokes cigarettes smokes everyday. With weed, the person may smoke only once in a while. And that way a person will be taking in more smoke via the cigarettes as opposed to weed.

Answer #3

Why does that matter? Sure, the cigarette manufacturers will lose loads of money. However, people will still want to buy cigarettes because of the nicotine addiction.

Answer #4

So then give it the same laws as alcohol. Do not smoke weed if you are going to be operating a vehicle. Alcoholic beverages aren’t illegal just because they can be a threat to public safety if a person drinks too much.

Answer #5

Think about it, weed makes you hallucinate and impairs judgement severely. SO if someone was to get behind the wheel of a car, while high on pot, that would be more of a threat to public safety than a regular cigarette.

Answer #6

Think about it, weed makes you hallucinate

Uhhh… no it doesn’t…

Why does that matter? Sure, the cigarette manufacturers will lose loads of money. However, people will still want to buy cigarettes because of the nicotine addiction.

I’m telling you why it was MADE illegal… because big tobacco companies had heavy influence in the political arena, and still do, but to a lesser degree.

A similar ‘demonization’ happened to absinthe, by the wine industry.

Answer #7

ok you have a point there but then again when you smoke marijuana, you usually inhale more deeply and hold it in for longer compared to a regular cigarette. another side effect from marijuana is you get the munchies which will disrupt your normal pattern of eating etc but you probably are not worried about that as you probably are not a heavy user but this drug is more psychologically addictive now compared to 30 years ago because it is up to 25 times more potent. Also this drug may cause other negative side effects like, paranoia, depression, anxiety, and it can awaken dormant mental illnesses.

Answer #8

the government just doesn’t want to admit it was wrong all these years

Answer #9

The real reason behind drug prohibition has nothing to do with the dangers of drugs, and everything to do with religion. When Prohibition was lifted, the same people who had pushed it through for religious reasons immediately attacked marijuana instead.

Since much fewer people dope up than drink, it was politically possible to criminalize pot. All the other prohibited drugs followed soon after.

You can’t smoke pot, because of Jesus and Mohammed.

Answer #10

I don’t use weed at all so I don’t know about the disrupted eating pattern. True, it is more addictive now. But cigarettes can cause lung cancer, emphysema, and a wide range of other medical conditions. But that apparently isn’t dangerous enough to make them illegal. So if a person wants to ruin their health by smoking weed, why not let them? Either that, or make cigarettes illegal.

Answer #11

Because weed would take HUGE chunk of profit away from the big cigarette manufacturers…
