What should I do when my mom won't let me dye my hair & I want to?

I’m 14 with about 20 strands of gray hair. I’ve seen other posts by people my age with gray hair (which is a comfort knowing I’m not the only one). It’s just that my unobservant friends are starting to notice. I know it’s genetics (both my parents are completely gray and my grandfather started going gray at age 19) but I still am very upset about it and my mom says I have more gray hair now than she did when she was 30! Please help me figure out what to do!

We did what my mom suggested and it worked pretty well. It just took longer than what we expected, partly b/c I can’t estimate very well – we cut 135 gray hairs off and there is still more! I’m glad that it worked b/c I really didn’t want to go behind my parents back and dye my hair (not to mention that after over a year I still don’t know what dye would be good for me :P ). Thanks for your suggestions though and if something comes up I’ll keep them in mind.

Try talkin to them about how you feel about the greys you have in your hair and help them understood what your feeling bout it better and discuss different options for dying hair..like temporary hair dye. and you dont necessarily have to change your hair color,,you can get a dye that matches the color you have now..so id point that out to them too. hope this helps ya out(:

Ask your mom if she would let you put a temperary color, the kind that washes out after so many shampoos , just to try it, its less damaging to your hair, and doesnt leave a line when it washes out, also, tell her you would pick one out that was as close to your natural haircolor as possible,, also, tell her you would be willing to do extra work around the house, to earn the $10 for the store color :) if that doesnt work, ask your mom to tell you what she is worried about, and talk about her feelings on it. and listen to what she tells you

Just rock it!!!

I knew this beautiful girl who was almost completely gray in highschool!!! But because she was so sweet and had an amazing personality no one cared! She didnt make a big issue of it and no one else did either.

Every time a friend of mine complains about a bad hair day I tell them to just rock it. Make people think you MEANT to do that…and you will do it again! LOL! Own it! Make people jealous for not having hair like yours!

And if you just cant do this, answer this. Is it easier to ask for permission from your mother…or forgiveness? Just saying. It might be easier to just do it and then let her yell and scream for awhile. Once its done, its done. And she might just realize that she likes it.

I probably should add that when my mom pointed out my gray hairs to my hairdresser she said that there’s nothing you can do about it. Mom said it was genetics, so I don’t know if she (the hairdresser) was talking about the genetic part or not. I will try talking to my mom about it, but I don’t think that it will work. I also don’t feel comfortable going behind my parents’ back. I know that I’m supposed to honor my parents and going behind their back isn’t doing that, but I hate having to see all my gray hair everyday. It’s just upsetting. Anyway, I’ll talk to my mom and see how it goes and I’ll let you all know.

I talked to my mom about my hair and it went better than I thought it would. I never mentioned dying my hair, I just told her how I felt. She is going to try to take each gray hair, separate it from all the other hairs, and trim it at the root so that it is cut really short and I can’t see it. Then we will just keep cutting it short. I hope this works, but somehow I doubt it. If it doesn’t work (and it won’t take too long for me to figure out if I like it or not), then I’ll talk to her about dying my hair.
