Suckling cat problem

I have a cat that can’t stop suckling clothes. He is almost a year old and whenever you pet him he starts suckling. He’ll even suckle on clothes when he is alone. I’ve tried slapping his rear end and tapping his nose as well as strong verbal commands but he always starts again. Any advice?

Answer #1

y would you punish your cat for doing that. your bogus. my kitties do that but to only 1 type of fabric

Answer #2

my cat suckles on only 1 type of fabric too I think its so cute, I bought her a blanket so she could suckle on it so she doesnt suckle on my dressing gown an get it all soggy, but 2 punish your cat 4 that I think its a bit silly, I kinda see it as a comfort thing for them also its to do with bein takein away from its mother so early, we rescued my cat who suckles on 1 type of fabric she was left in a box with her brother at the side of a road but sadly her brother died, an she lived x

my cat sucks on blankets, clothes, and etc..and he is about 9years old so don’t worry its just normal he got taken away from his mother too long and thats why the cat does that hehe mine’s the same lol>>

Answer #4

My sister’s cat did this - she was taken away from her mother (the cat, not the sister) too young. It was just one of those things. We gave her one item of clothing which she was allowed to suckle (an old dressing gown my sister had grown out of) and never permitted her to suckle anything else. That way she had her ‘security blanket’ but knew that nothing else was allowed. Maybe you can try something like that…

Answer #5

My cat still sucks on me and she is 5 years. old. I find it so cute. She’ll sit on my lap and knead her paws on me while she sucks on my tee shirt. I think it is her way of comforting herself, like a child will suck on a pacifier. I see no harm in this behavior and we get our quality time together while she bonds with me. She will only do this when I am wearing a cotton shirt . I know she was separated from her Mom too early and sees me as a mommy replacement. This behavior is part of a cats genetic make up and to punish the cat is beyond my imagination. Try encouraging your cat to only suckle one item of clothing. Cat may grow out of this but some may not.

Answer #6

My cat sucked my German Shepherd’s lips till he was almost 2…since the dog didn’t mind…neither did I.

Answer #7

Oh, and cats aren’t like dogs. Tapping and slapping don’t really make any difference. Pulling the item away might just work, but I suggest giving an alternative, as I said above.

Answer #8

Cats tend to need to suckle more if there are weaned to early. I have always been told this. Whatever the reason the cat does it; I don’t think it should be punished for it. I think some fabrics remind the cat of it’s mother more then others.
