Should he be approved and why ?

Nominee to be treasury secretary Timothy Geithner failed to pay taxes in his past - not everybody fails to keep up with their taxes, surely a competent one could have been found - people are in jail right now for not paying - next time, we can use his excuse, ‘I forgot’ if he isn’t considered above the law- Should he be approved and why ?

Well, I’d rather a neurosurgeon who cheated on his wife…not his exams…thank you…

Answer #2

please let him pick the general practitioner… please let him pick the general practitioner…

Answer #3

If he did not do anything criminal, which it does not look like he did, yes he should be approved.

Answer #4

Seems odd he’s considered a ‘Financial Wizard’ yet he used TurboTax for his returns.

Answer #5

Interestingly, three Democrats voted against: Tom Harkin of Iowa, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin. Independent Bernie Sanders also voted no. Arlen Specter told reporters early on Monday that he would vote yes, but he changed his mind and voted no. Robert Byrd, by the way, captured the sentiments of John Kyl, Jim Bunning, and others when he said: “Had [Geithner] not been nominated for Treasury secretary, it’s doubtful that he would have ever paid these taxes.”

Answer #6

Let’s see…the first Chairman of the SEC? A crook (and a Kennedy) who knew how to do the classic “pump & dump” schemes of his day became the SEC chairman because he knew how to break the rules.

So…given that precedent rules in our courtrooms across the land, why should this guy not be approved? I don’t get it.

Answer #7

Everyone is a package deal. You take the good and you take the bad.

Obviously Geithner has skeletons in his closet. On the other hand, we are in such a financial crisis that Obama is going to choose who he thinks will be the best treasury secretary even if there are problems in their past.

If you needed brain surgery would you prefer a neurosurgeon who cheated on his exams or a general practitioner with impecable integrity but hasn’t performed any surgery more complex than lancing the occasional boil?

Answer #8

It it would be wrong for someone who failed to pay $34,023 in taxes to become Treasury Secretary in charge of getting taxes from the rest of us. This is not about party, it is about principle. If Geithner is approved, he will be a symbol of favoritism and rich politicians getting a different deal than the rest of us.
