What is a proctor essay?

I applied for a job with the disabilities office at my university to be a monitor for a student with a disability. They contacted me and told me to come in to do a Proctor Essay. I googled it first but the answers vary widely and they don’t tell me what it I exactly. Do you guys know? :/

A proctor is someone who watches over you while you do something, in lieu of the instructor. So if you’re taking distance learning classes, the instructor will send your essay instructions to someone locally to you and that person will issue you the instructions, watch you write the essay, turn it in for you. This ensures you’re not cheating. My instructors have had varying levels of trust. One wanted the person to be a teacher, that’s it. Another wanted “anyone of outstanding character in your community” which included policeman, teacher, clergy, librarian, etc.
