Why aren't people aware of human trafficking?

I’ve been noticing lately a lot of the issues in our world today are not being spoken of as much as they should have. Something that I have been reserching in my spare time is human trafficking which is now the worlds most illegeal profit maker and the industry is growing bigger. It’t not just happening in third world countires but in our own backyards in north america. It’s so sick to see people taking advantage and treating others practiaclly like slaves. We don’t live in the 1800s anymore so we shou;d be able to understand slavery is wrong and people have rights but apparently not. It’s not just women who are suffering within human trafiicking it’s men and children to… CHILDREN thats just sick and wrong. The worst part is we never see this in the media in north america … I have not yet to see a commerical on human trafficking or a advertisment in the newpaper of awarness of human trafficking. Why is that its as much as our issue as the rest of the world so why do we avoid it so much???

Thanks for bringing it up. Yes we need to be more aware and we just shut our minds to things like that all the time which is wrong. I will pray which is the best I can do. This is where pedophelia is coming into play. The Catholic Church is fighting against it since all of these accusations came out and it awarded millions in damages. Now anyone in the Church that has anything remotely to do with children has to go through a 4 hour session to show how pedophelia affects the child, the family, and the community. How to fight against it and how to see signs of potential pedophiles. I am teaching religion. I went through this session and it is a true eye-opener how these people work themselves into “friendships” with these kids and the manipulations that go on by these offenders. We are being called to contact officials if we do see cases of possible pedophilia. Trafficking people has got to be the sickest thing and we need to be aware of this.

United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking website www.ungift.org aims to be an extension of UN GIFT activities worldwide. We would like it to evolve into a vibrant online community where people exchange views, showcase their work, talk about their experiences and strengthen the fight against human trafficking. With your help we can make it a valuable resource and a tool to take this fight forward. The organized crime of human trafficking needs a fitting organized response.

United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) was formally launched in London on 26 March 2007. It is designed to have a long-term impact to create a turning point in the worldwide fight against human trafficking. 27million people are trafficked each year. UN.GIFT intends to take action against human trafficking in all its manifestations – commercial sexual exploitation, bonded labour, organ trade, camel jockeying, forced marriages, domestic labour, illegal adoption, and other exploitative work – through creating partnerships at a global level with all sectors of society.

The ultimate goal of the Global Initiative is to contribute to ending human trafficking– estimated to have a total market value of about $32 billion worldwide. UNODC has a two-pronged strategy for achieving this goal – increasing public awareness of the problem and coordinating existing but disparate efforts by international and national groups, governments and non-governmental organizations and by concerned individuals to end the practice.

Numerous regional GIFT events will culminate in Vienna with a Global Forum against Human Trafficking from 13th to 15th Feb 2008.

The objective of The Vienna Forum is to raise awareness, facilitate cooperation and partnerships among the various stakeholders. It will bring together representatives from Member States, UN system organizations, other regional and international organizations, the business community, academia, non-governmental organizations and other elements of civil society. The Forum will allow for an open environment to enable all parties involved to take concrete steps to fight human trafficking, within their spheres of action.

The Forum will be a catalyst for solution-seeking ideas and address three overriding themes on human trafficking: 1.Vulnerability: why does human trafficking happen;

  1. Impact: human and social consequences of human trafficking;
  2. Action: innovative approaches to solving complex problems. · It is time to join forces to prevent human trafficking. · Give this global problem a global solution. · Rally under the banner of the Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking. · Get involved! · Together we can save people and put traffickers behind bars.

I think most people aren’t aware of how prevalent it can be. I’m sure most people in my country (New Zealand) think that that sort of thing doesn’t happen here. I would like to believe that too. But, I’m smart enough to realize that it probably does happen to an extent here. After all, there are a lot of immigrants wanting to come to safe little ol’ NZ, and there’s already been scams involving Asian immigrants both here and in Australia - not involving human trafficking per se but almost, but it’s not hard to imagine the same unscrupulus individuals branching into that if they haven’t already.

WOW!!! I wasnt aware that we, Americans, were taking part in something so disgusting. I am very intrigued and I am going to do some investigating on this subject so that maybe I will be one more person who can speak up against this heinus act. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Answer #5

Yeah thanks for your guys answers I really enjoy people that are actually optimistic enough to believe this is happen to everybody and not just third world countries. I just recently found out that 32 people were found in Colordo in the States that were trafficed here and the worst thing is that 4 of those people were white and from different parts of the States and had been kidnapped and forced into being trafficked. Anyways just want to make people aware

I think people aren’t aware at how much of it goes on. Certainly they are aware that it does happen, programs like the Network for Missing and Exploited Children are nationwide - ever see those alerts at WalMart? They update that regularly.

Also many retail stores participate in a program called Code Adam… it’s crucial to get a missing child back ASAP. In retail I’ve been taught that predators can easily change a child’s looks in a matter of minutes.

That’s also why there are programs like Amber Alert.

Human trafficking is a really big problem with immigrants - they are promised to be able to come to America but then are sold as slaves.

I don’t think people are aware because it isn’t something that happens right under our noses. The people that take part in it go to great lengths to keep it secret. Secrecy is their biggest and strongest weapon.

what are some ways besides these online things to create awarness of this? the only place I see such things are online! serious. if I never went online, I wouldnt even know what “human traficking” was/is.

but I have read some stories of young girls being sold as slaves, but it wasnt labeled human traficking. but they were tricked.

this is not “like” slavery. this IS slavery. also, I read of these brothels. I wouldnt doubt there are some in america. this is just so horrible! more should be done, more people need to be aware.

This site sucks. It does not even allow a web adress.

Thanks for bringing that issue to peoples atention. Certainly human trafficking is NOT a third world issue. Hundreds of thousands of women in europe are traficked every year. In 2005 A CBS news crew bought a woman slave in Romania. Check the URL

PLEASE IGNORE THE SPACES I typed the url with spaces in order to be able to post the link

Watch sex slaves a PBS documentary

Governments should do more namely governments in europe.

Sex traders get almost no penalty for their awfull trade. That must stop.
