Do you think its fair for teachers to get fired because student scores are low?

Answer #1

That’s a tough one. Ideally, teachers are responsible for what their students are learning, and should be held accountable for their instruction…however, when a student simply doesn’t want to apply him/herself, it’s out of the teachers hands. I think it should be looked at on a case-by-case basis. Think about it…if you have a class full of students who are all getting failing grades, then obviously the teacher is doing something wrong.

Answer #2

It depends. If year and year every class that the teacher is responsible for keeps getting very low scores - yes she is to blame and should be fire imo. If its a continuous pattern then its not the students, its the teacher.

Answer #3

The problem with firing teachers for low test scores is that teachers “teach to the test.” I read that many political science classes do not discuss current events because it is considered a waste of time since it won’t be on the standardized test.

True education is lighting a lamp rather than filling a vessel. When you make the goal of education achieving a test score you get test scores instead of education.

Answer #4

I agree.

Answer #5

i believe that teachers cannot help what is taught on the outside of school walls. Therefore most of a students learning should come from their parents. Parents are supposed to push their children towards wanting to do good in school and to learn and it should start by parents teaching their children the basics before they enter school doors in the first place. The only way that i could see blaming a teacher is if the teacher absolutely does not teach at all. President Obama fired a whole school of teachers because the students in that school kept getting low scores on their tests, but i think that was unfair because teachers can only do so much for a student to learn and pass a test. If they do not want to be taught then how could they pass a test in the first place. Now Obama wants to add an extra month of education in America to make school year long because he believes that American children are academically and competitively behind versus children in Japan and China. what do you guys think about that topic?

Answer #6

i think it is fair because if the scores are low, then the teacher is doing something wrong. when i was in 7th grade, i had a bad teacher, and he got fired because the students were doing poorly on quizzes, tests, and we basically weren’t learning much and it was all confusing
