Is it likely his new addiction to God will stick?

I have an old friend who was recently released from jail. He was pretty bad into drugs. Now he has discovered religion (I am not against it) I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this and if it is likely his new God addiction will stick?

Answer #1

well my dad has bin through thte same thing religion is not some thing that sticks well I guess in a way because what will most likely happen “talking from experiance” he will draw close if he is true to god and really does believe and want to know more,,, but as god calls us in the bible we are just sheep and he will soon drift away but if he has people praying for him and is true god will help him,,,

just cuase you believe in god doesnt mean you wont go through ups and downs usually thats when things get really hard because the devil will try to pull him away from god because the devil knows there are so many amazing things instore for him

ever addict I know suddenly “sees God ; Becomes a religious freak; yadada” But they still somehow go back to addiction. I have yet to meet a man, or woman, who regardless of suddenly having a new found religion stays clean. I really hope your friend is different

My Mom’s boyfriend has been in and out of jail for years and years now. Every time he gets locked backed up it seems he re-discovers his religion ;P It hasn’t stuck with him, not when he’s out anyways. But everybody’s different, hopefully your friend stays with it. Good luck :)

Sometimes it takes a huge and dramatic change in our lives to make us look at something new. A jailed drug addict is certainly experiencing huge and dramatic changes! From my point of view as a Christian, your friend has found a source of strength and self respect - Jesus loves him and the Holy Spirit can give him strength to cope with things he wouldn’t be able to handle on his own.

I mentioned Nicky Cruz in a recent post - he was a heroin addict who became a Christian, and later had a successful ministry helping other addicts come off heroin. The book of his life is fairly dated now (it’s called ‘The Cross and the Switchblade’) but it’s still a pretty exciting read which proves, along the way, that holding onto God can stop you going back to your old life of drugs.

So I pray your friend will hold onto his new relationship with Jesus - he’ll be bound to ‘grow up’ in faith, so he won’t always be exactly as he is now about it, but it will give him the strength he needs.

If he recieved Salvation - it will more than stick - it will last an eternity !!

Answer #6

Its according to how deep his conversion truly was. Many find what is called Jail house religion, that serves their purpose while they are there, and helps them to come out, however, when the rubber meets the road, that is the true test. So, time will tell. If he/she reverts back to their old ways, they only had a head knowledge of the things of God. True conversion, is just that. It changes one, from the inside out. Its not what the mouth says that counts… Its what the heart believes and thinks, and what the body is allowed to do. In other words, we can talk the talk all we want to, but, the truth is in the walk. And those looking on, know the difference. It does not take too long to spot a fake.

Answer #7

My husband and I are both in recovery, but we never jumped on the god train. (we are still clean by the way)

Answer #8

Most people use religion as an excuse or as a substitute for the drug they are trying to get free of. However, I do know some people who “found God” and stayed clean. It really depends on whether he has changed and that’s something only he knows. I wish you both the best.
