Why do some women choose not to get a epidural when it could ease the pain?

Are there possible negative health side-effects to it?

Answer #1

if they do hard labor for a living..it can really shorten there back life

Answer #2

A lot of them see it as more of a hinderence for numerous reasons. And many women like to try to take as few dr.ugs as possible. They pride themselves on it. And yes, I’ve heard several woman say they have back pain problems from the epidural they once had…and usually if it was more than once (from having more than one child) it’s even worse. That’s just from my knowledge about it from moms on Tumblr I follow…

Answer #3

There are many myths that an epidural has negative effects on the baby. Another controversial issue with epidurals is the individual’s moral/ethical beliefs. Some people think it’s unethical while others see no problem with it.

Answer #4

With any medications there are risks, so some people prefer not to get an epidural. And some people just think the more medical intervention, the less natural the experience.

Answer #5

When I had my first child, I was never offered an epidural - I didn’t even know what an epidural was. Having survived that 28 hour labour drug free I knew I could handle it, so there was no need for an epidural with my other two.

Answer #6

Answer #8

Wow, I’ve heard that before… more power to you :)

Answer #9

i should add, i think some people opt out of an epidural due to their fear of huge freaking needles being stuck in between their vertebrae!

Answer #10

I had natural childbirth so went through the whole pain bit but afterwards, when my roommates were still half asleep trying to recover from their epidurals, I was up making tea for myself, feeling extremely alert. So I don’t regret that at all. My reason for not having it - wasn’t trying to be brave, just got psyched out by the thought of the procedure and what could go wrong.
