Why object to 'Defensive' missiles ?

  It is rather simple. If we (US) have a shield that can protect us from Russian missles than we could attack Russia with impunity.

  Our current situation with Russia is MAD, or Mutually Assured Destruction. The entire cold war the US and USSR were detered from attacking each other because both sides knew that in a nuclear exchange they would loose far more than they could possibly gain. If either side had a dependable defensive weopon than we could no longer depend on MAD to keep both sides at peace.
