i heard it was something about the clouds clasahing together or something but that doesnt make sense to me…. clouds are soft, how can they make noise? or maybe it was something about the wind ripping when it forces against itself….idk good questino

Answer #2

The temperature of lightning can be that of the suns surface making the air around the lightning bolt expand very fast and when the bolt is gone, the large colmun of air shrinks back down to it’s normal size and creates the rumbling noise.

You can see lightning very far away very quickly. Light travels 300 million meters every second, so you can see a lightning bolt as soon as it happens. The delay between the bolt and the atmosphere contraction is because Sound only travels through air at about 344 meters per second. So, the further away a bolt is, the longer it takes to hear the Big Crunch of air.

Answer #3

so like is thunder the sound of lightening pretty much?

Answer #4

The temperature of lightning can be that of the sun’s, so the massive heat makes the air around the lightning bolt expand very fast and when the bolt is gone, the large colmun of air shrinks back down to it’s normal size and creates the infamous rumbling noise.

You can see lightning very far away very quickly. Light travels 300 million meters every second, so you can see a lightning bolt as soon as it happens. So, the further away a bolt is, the longer it takes to hear the Big Crunch of air. I hope that made sense…

Answer #5

Yeah… That’s pretty much it… I think I posted this twice… Sorry if I did… I seriously have no idea how everything works on this… Haha… Oops…

Answer #6

I think Lightning is a very amazing thing… And I have been interested in meteorology for a LONG time… But yeah… I hope my answer made sense and sorry I posted two of them… Haha…

Answer #7

lol its cool. i had no idea. my sisters an idiot n she told me that crappy answer i gave haha. ugh,. my life

Answer #8

Haha… It’s not a crappy answer… It could have been worse… :)

Answer #9

Lightning causes thunder. the sound comes from air that suddenly gets very hot… A bolt of lightning can make the air around it as hot as (10,000 Celsius). n thats hotter than the surface of the Sun!!! The hot air rushes away from the lightning bolt. The air rushing away makes the loud sound of thunder.
