Pregnant shih tzu

My shih tzu is going to deliver any time and I am not sure what to do. I have been told I wil have to cut the sack and cord of the puppies.

Answer #1

I don’t think you’ll have to. The mama does all the work. Delivery is a tiring time for dogs. They lick everything off of them and then clean them by licking them. Just sit back and keep an eye on her and if she pushes the puppies out and doesn’t do anything then step in. make sure to have very clean hands! use latex gloves if you have em.

Usually mom will take care of the birth, but keep an eye on her. Do you have a puppy box or somwhere she and the puppies can stay for the first few weeks? Shih tzu tend to have smalle litters due to their size, but if there are to many or the fateher was a lot bigger the puppies may get stuck, have your vets number colse by. You should feed the mother puppy chow, its higher in fat and helps he make more milk. I’m kinda in the same boat, and I’m learning a lot. funmail me if you have any questions.

Answer #3

OMG! you do not know what you are doing! DO not go near those puppies. Get to the nearest Vets office and talk to them about the birthing process and what to do.

Do not do anything. If you do not know what you are doing. It is best to call the Vet’s take your dog in, get some advice and follow what the Vet tells you to do.

There are books at your local library, tons of them on the subject. BUT your dog needs a check up anyway. And you need professional advice.

Answer #4

the babies come out easily, usually. if one gets stuck you have to GENTLY pull it out. put the baby in front of the mama and she will lick everything off and stimulate breathing. you might need yo cot the cord. GOOD LUCK!!!
