Generally when a person sleep talks they are saying something from their dreams or occasionaly when in one of the earlier stages of REM sleep a person can hear questions you ask them and even respond to them when they are sleeping. If they are sleep talking from a dream its simply because their subconcious is at work at the moment causing their dreams and the are subconciously saying the things outloud that are being said in their head. The same thing happens occasionaly when your awake also….when your thinking about something so hard and talking to youself in your head - you occasionaly slip up and say something outloud as well. As for a person who can hear things you say and respond - there are different levels of sleep called REM sleep and each one is a different level of conciousness. If you try and communicate with a person while they are still in the first or second level of REM sleep its possible for them to be asleep yet still hear and answer you…and most of the time not recall this conversation ever occuring either.
