Lactose Intollerance.
Okay, so I found out I am lactose intollerant a few weeks ago. :/ Ugh. I have some pills to take so that I wont have as bad of a reaction when I have dairy, but I dont take them very often. Instead I just cut out milk and everything else. I have been eating healthier, I figure, because I dont eat chocolate, heavy breads, things fried in batter, cheese, etc. However, I am sixteen, and I have been hearing a lot lately about the importance of drinking two to three glasses of milk a day and yogurt and stuff. Should I commit to taking the pills or is it okay to avoid dairy?
If you are lactose intolerant it’s essential to avoid lactose in any form, at least for a while until your body has a chance to recover and stabilize itself.
Forget the dairy/muilk hype, there is a vast amount of research - ever since the 1960s and 70s - showing that milk is not ‘nature’s nearly perfect food’ for anything but infants. Bear in mind that in many areas of the world, people do not drink milk, and use (if anything) only sour-milk products like yoghurt. That’s because their bodies have stopped producing the enzymes necessary to digest cow’s milk - which can indicate that nature has meant milk mainly for infants.
It’s true that many people who have problems with milk can better digest yoghurt and other sour-dairy products, but the saftest thing is to cut out dairy as much as you can. (If you read the labels you’ll see that dairy products are used in masses of other things.)
The main thing that dairy products can supply the body is calcium, as well as the fat-soluble vitamins A and D. There are plenty of other sources of these - for calcium, leafy green vegetables, nuts, dried fruit, tofu , among other things. (See http://www.vegsoc.org/info/calcium.html)
well you can get lactose milk. thats what my boyfriend gets because he is lactose intolerant too. and when ever you want to have something that is dairy you probably should take the pills. without the calcium in dairy your bones could become very weak and that isnt healthy.
