What is the point of going through life if there is no afterlife?

Being athiest, its like what is the point of going through life if there is no afterlife? I want to know from other athiasts, whats your conclusion, what is the meaning of your life? Also im not going to accept jesus christ as my savior, so dont try that one.

Typical arrogance of a christian zealot. They think only believers can live fulfilled lives. That my friend, is a bunch of bovine excrement. I know this is all there is to life, our existence right here. So I am not spending my time worrying about life afterwards, since there is none. Yours is a life wasted in fear, fear of sinning, or upsetting the sky guy, because he is so loving that he will cast you into hell for not believing in him. You waste your life, and probably money, following a lie.

If you are wrong, you have lost your freedom in life. You have lived your life in fear for nothing. Why wouldn’t you want to be me (or any other atheist)? Is this loving god of your so cruel that he would condemn someone to hell simply for not believing in something without proof? Why would a loving god do that?

‘well, since you are an athiest there is nothing to live for at all. who cares if you live life to its fullest, since you are going to rot anyway it wont make a difference. there is a point in life. and since you are aitheist, you dont know it yet. why wait until you are already dead and its too late, when you can learn now, and start living. “

that was sort of harsh, and it’s not going to make anyone nonchristian want to become one.

well, I'm a christian but I don't live in fear of sinning/ upsetting God, I accept the fact that I sin, and just try to do better, but I know/believe that I can't be perfect.

I also disagree with “ you have no freedom in your life” beacuase… we still have the choice to do or not do something,

I mean I have a choice to swear or not, but I choose not(and if swearing is something that makes life enjoyable why do people get in trouble for it at school?), or I have a choice to smoke/ do drugs or not, but I choose not to(is freedom doing drugs and messing this so called live life to the fullest, because drugs will shorten this life that is to be lived to the fullest.)
some christians, may not make the right choice, I know many christians that swear, but I know if they ask God to forgive them, they're forgiven. they don't ask out of fear of being struck down, they do it because they choose to.

well, If you’re right and there’s no afterlife, we just die and that’s it then, christians are the BIGGEST idiots ever for believing that there is a God, but if you’re wrong, and there is life after death, and Hell is a real place, well you get it, and have heard many many times. God is a loving God, He wants us to believe without being given proof.so yeah. sorry if I’m offending.

Answer #3

well youll get those hardcore christians who try to push their religion on you and say youll be damned if you dont but im not liek that I beleive in my chatholic faith but hell just live your life have fun do the best you can while your here its only a short period of time people have lived on this earth for a long time and our generation is only here for what 70 on average I say do what you want get what you want and have no regrets that all I would have to say.

I’m an atheist, and yet, I’m actually going to refer to the Bible on this one. It’s actually one of the few books of the Bible I really like. If you read Ecclesiastes, the author complains that life is pointless, everything is vanity, nothing is ever really new, why even bother going on?

He ultimately decides to enjoy the good things in life, since it is so short, like food, drink, friends, nature, etc. And he decides that in order to truly enjoy life, you should also help others be able to enjoy it.

I think that pretty much sums it up for me.

Answer #5

because god has given you a second chance to love and praise him. Every good thing that happens in your life should be praise to him. and all teh burdens and worry that you have in your life should be placed on him. Jesus died for you so you wouldn’t have to expirence a bad “afterlife”. God wants us to live life to the fullest…his way and once you have something to live for GODS way is the only way. you say your athiest…alright and youi dont believe ina and after life. I AM a follower of god so if I live life to the fullest and by some turn of evens im wrong than I haven’t lost anything but if im right than I wouldn’t want to be you…its just something to think about.

god bless

Answer #6

Well the entire point of life would be to enjoy it and to live to the fullest…

If you look at it another way, there is no real significance to life if there’s an afterlife, simply because there’s this perfect life waiting afterwards which kinda makes this one look small and insignificant in comparison…

If you’ve only got one life and limited time the goal is to do whatever you want to do, and live life out as best you can because there are no second chances, there’s no tomorrow and there’s no eternity, there’s here and now, and you take advantage of the little time you have.

Answer #7

When we die part of us continues on in our legacy of our offspring, the ideas we had that continue on in other people, and the lives we touched.

We owe our life to the world and in return we should leave the world at least a little better place that it would have been without us.

That is the source of my immortality and ethics anyway.

Answer #8

Because there is no afterlife. This is the only life you have, so live it well.

Answer #9

well, since you are an athiest there is nothing to live for at all. who cares if you live life to its fullest, since you are going to rot anyway it wont make a difference. there is a point in life. and since you are aitheist, you dont know it yet. why wait until you are already dead and its too late, when you can learn now, and start living.

Answer #10

You are not offending me, so don’t worry. Choosing to do an action or not do it, is not the same as believing in something. Do you choose not to believe in the Santa? No, you have no proof he exists, so you don’t believe in him. You could pretend and say you do, but it doesn’t mean you really beleive in your mind. I feel the same way about god. It is no different than Santa, the easter bunny and the tooth fairy.

How do you reconcile a loving god with one who cast someone into hell for the sole reason he couldn’t believe in something without proof. That is not a loving god, and if he does exist, and he casts me into the fire, I will gladly take it rather than be with something that cruel and vain.

Answer #11

To have fun, and to learn and to experience.

Answer #12

Not everything has to be in the physical view. I’ve read a few non-religious views on afterlife, and they believe that when the physical body dies, the soul moves up to another dimension, or a higher density. You could also say an expansion of knowledge, or the possible confrontation of a whole new “life”, or race of beings. Our lives here on Earth could be one of many stages of our development throughout our “mental” lives. There are a lot of very interesting websites where people give their opinions on this subject. You should check them out.

Answer #13

Actually, what’s the point even if there is an after life?

I can’t think of any good reason for us to be here anyway. So women get pregnant and we bring more children into the world, what difference does it make when it all blows up? I’ve thought about it and no reason seems good enough to me.

Answer #14

I dont beleive in any “god” or anything but I do beleive in something after death I just dont know what it is yet heaven is only one of them there are many others as well but im pretty sure something will happen, I just dont know what it is yet but its not heaven. lol

Answer #15

Ty and filletofspam summed it up more succinctly and clearly than I ever could. I agree with both of them 100% - live this life to the fullest, while making a difference.

Answer #16

Life does not require some grand externally imputed purpose, to be worth living.
