This has been discussed fairly extensively on philosophy forums. Here’s a paraphrase I found from a site online:

“Being idealistic is accompanied with naïvety and so tendency to be taken advantage of, high expectation and so depression because you or the world cannot always fulfill it, visionary and so out of the contemporary’s time.”

So therefore, to me…yes, it’s a handicap. However, the passion of idealism could help you make a difference, so it’s not 100% a negative thing.
