Gastric bypass for a 350lb woman?

What are your thoughts of gastric bypass?

Answer #1

Hi Hun, I had lathascopic gastric bypass on July 19, 2005. I am 28 yeas only now. At that time I weighed 252lbs. I know weigh 140lbs. So from a weight loss stand point the surgery was very successful. I don’t know if you have consulted a doctor about this yet but, there are 3 types of gastric bypass surgery. (Open, Lathascopic, & Lat-band) The second and third are the least invasive with the shortest recovery time. I used a very well know surgon in Athens, GA. If you would like his number or more detailed information you can funmail me. As far as risk vs. reward…I do NOT regret it! However, it is NOT without side effects, lifestyle changes, and the need for patience! You must learn how to eat again & EAT HEALTH ACCORDING to a more selective diet. Things you use to like may not tast the same anymore. Things you use to love may now make you sick. FYI popcicles will become your best friend. (I reccoment the bryers sugar free) A few more things to consider: it is strongly advised that you do NOT get pregnant for 18 to 24 months after surgery. I got pregnant at 11 months after surgery and had a very difficult time. Thank God my daughter is healthy! Another thing to consider is the “skin issue” If you would like more info on that funfail me.

I have a large amount of information on this surgery. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have! I can honestly say I know how difficult this decision can be!

Take care & God Bless Mel

My personal opinion on gastric bypass is that it is very unhealthy and should only be used in life treating situations as a last resort. I think if you are able to lose the weight without medical help then I think you should but you should not use it as aquick fix because it is not meant for that. There are also a lot of medical concerns with the surgery that are usually not mentioned. There have been several times where the anestetic they use has killed patients because of the high dose that they were given because of their weight. Also there can be so many complications with the surgery such as even getting to the stomach through all the fat can sometimes take a half an hour. After the surgery patients also experience stomach pains, usually cannot handle solid foods for awhile, vomit in rare occasions and diherra can usually occur and these are just safe side affects. There is also problems if the stomach leaks and your stomach acids can burn your other organs and can result in death. Or if the patient goes back to eating regular amounts of food again their stomach can brust. You have to have a lot of self restraint. and you ahve to eat like that for the rest of your life. I think that 350 pounds is not that bad and the weight can be lost compared to a person who weights 500 pounds and is not physically able to move to be able to lose the weight. Anyways I’m not saying that gastric bypass is a bad surgery by any means I think it should be used with extreme caution.

I had it done 13 years ago & lost 110 pounds in a year. Looked & felt great. Had 5 kids in 6 years. Stress, lack of sleep. etc has put me back to being overweight. I kept it off for 7 years. I could use the surgery again. Things that changed for me after surgery…hate milk, throw up everytime I eat steak, brocolli or chinese food, my teeth needed a lot of work(that might be due to all my pregnancies, though), and I have totally disgusting extra flab at the top of my thighs and my stomach. I would recommend it to anyone who is sick of being fat.

There are a lot of things that could go wrong, and that is why doctors usually go through a couple of consultations with you to warn you of the dangers of the actual surgery and what life will be like afterwards… I actually saw a documentary of some women who had had the surgery, but because there were other psychological issues at hand (probably why they ate to solve them…) they became addicted to alcohol, shopping, and gambling…

All that aside, I think it gives some people their lives back. For some people it is the right choice… Aside from the health issues that come from being fat, it simply isnt fun not being able to do certain things, wear what you want, and being treated the way you are.

It depends on the type of person you are, but if all else fails, I believe it does a lot of good
