French braid turning out a dutch braid?

I have been trying to do a french braid on myself for some time now. Every time I try it turns out to be a dutch braid. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong, and how I can fix it? I mean the dutch braid is cute too but I’d really like to know how to do the french one too…

Maybe you’re braiding under instead of over. Watch some YouTube videos and they’ll show you how.
