Yeah. Peristalsis (the wave-like motion of smooth muscles) pushes the food down. Now, if you're wondering why the food doesn't go back, the entire digestive track has sphincters (valves) located on segments. There's the Cardiac Sphincter that separates the esophagus and the stomach, so that the food won't go back to the esophagus once it enters the stomach. The Pyloric Sphincter (separates the stomach from the small intestine), the Ileocecal valve (separates the Small intestine from the large colon, and the @nal sphincters work in the same manner. =)
just like Colleen said :P ... your esophagus uses peristalisis which is the rythmical contraction of the muscle layer that surrounds it. They move in ''waves'' which moves the bolus ( chewed food mixed with saliva) towards the stomach :)
