How do you defuse a BOMB?

lol i was watching the movie THE HURT LOCKER and i was thinking i wish i could do that job. But in most bomb movies you have to cut a colored wire or type a password. But hell there is alot of types of bombs. But how do those people defuse them with like a second left on the timer?

Movies don’t often show the realistic side of things - they’re doing it for one thing - suspense. It’s a dangerous job though, and you have to go through extensive training to qualify for such a career. Army, fire department or private, I think.

I love the Hurt Locker, that’s an intense movie. Anyway, those guys have to go through a lot of training before they are able to go out in the field and save lives of course. I’m sure exactly how to diffuse a bomb but as you said, they probably have to cut certain wires/enter some sort of passcode/etc. And in order for them to do their job they need to be able to work well under pressure especially if there’s a timer on the bomb.

Answer #3

The red wire-blue wire is just Hollywood. I could make a house bomb and use pink wires and yellow ones, there is no special order, although terrorists would use a color or something to know what is connected to what, without us knowing what is the function of that wire, we can’t assume it’s the right one. People who defuse bombs rely on cutting wires as a seldom, if at all, a possibility. The most known, and effective, method for defusing a bomb is using liquid nitrogen to freeze the bomb. That is because most bombs are battery-powered. The liquid nitrogen would freeze the energy particles in the battery, thus stopping the timer or detonation trigger. From then, they would check and see if it is safe to remove the actual explosive material from the detonator, fuse, etc.

Answer #4

Ohh and yes, a second or two in the timer, is also Hollywood. In real life, if the bomb squad doubt that they can defuse in time (plus) then all they could do is evacuate the area, and try to isolate the bomb from buildings and other factors that would potentially cause collateral damage.

Answer #5

You need special training in that field lots of it and requires a license i think

I believe EOD has a minimum asvab score of 70 across all the branches. It wouldnt be to hard to qualify for. Talk to a military recruiter in a few years. Ive met a couple of them when I was deployed, they were pretty chill.
