Is it a good thing to skip breakfast?

is it a good thing to skip breakfast?

Answer #1

Conventional wisdom is that it is bad to skip breakfast.

I’ve noticed when I visited Scandinavia that their noon meal is the main meal of the day. Their breakfasts and dinners were light meals but anything fancy and rich that they ate was at lunchtime; compare this to the American standard of eating our largest meal at dinnertime. I’ve read a few studies that indicated that eating your largest meal earlier in the day is beneficial and even aids weight loss so the Scandinavian way might be better.

Taken to its logical extreme perhaps breakfast should be our largest meal of the day. I’ve noticed that farmers I stayed with ate very hearty breakfasts to give them energy for hard physical labor all day. Most thought nothing of polishing off a half dozen eggs, a big stack of pancakes, and several slices of ham, sausage, and/or bacon. I’ve tried eating my largest meal for breakfast and light meals for lunch and dinner and it seemed like a good way to go though when I dine with other people it is hard to mesh. Lately I’ve been more likely to skip lunch than breakfast. When I eat a hearty breakfast often I’m not even hungry at lunchtime.

Don’t skip breakfast, eat hearty in the morning.

Here is what my mom always said:

Breakfast like a King Lunch like a Queen Supper like a pauper

Meaning the breakfast meal should be the biggest to get you started with the day. The noon meal should be a smaller meal, and the evening meal should be the smallest so your body doesn’t have to digest so much before bedtime.
