when I get angry I feel like breaking something. counting backwards, deep breaths and all that stuff doesn't help. what can I do?
Different techniques/suggestions work for different people. Try them all, until you find what works best for you. Here are a few more: 1) Run. 2) Write out your anger in an unbroken and uninhibited flow of thoughts, feelings, urges, images, memories, fantasies, etc., whatever comes to mind. 3) Break something expendable (my ex used to keep a bunch of old china-ware dishes for that purpose). 4) Try different kinds of meditation; for example, sit quietly and, instead of trying not to be angry, let your anger continue, and pay very close attention to how it feels physically, where and how you sense it in your body. Name those sensations and notice what happens when you continually focus your attention on them in their purely physical aspect, disregarding the associated emotion.
