Why doesn't my baby want the bottle, will she starve herself?

I have been nursing my 4 month old since birth and she had a few bottles and didn’t seem to mind them… Now she refuses to take to the bottle… I sometimes go out for about 2 hours and when I come home my husband is trying to give her a bottle but shes freaking out and wont take it… So then I nurse her… Just wondering if I am gone for longer will she finally just give in and drink the bottle or will she starve herself?

does the bottle have your milk in it or formula? if its the formula, then she might be allergic to the formula or the water you mix with it. make sure you use filtered water to mix with it. or whatever you use. you shuld go to the doctor and ask them if she is allergic to the formula/whatever you put in the bottle. or else it could be that she is just not used to the taste of the formula yet. mix your breast milk with the formula see if she’ll take that. do it gradually, your milk to formula ratio. she wont starve if she doesnt eat for a day, but feed her what she is sapose to eat. try doing that with the formula and she can go a day with out food she’ll be okay, but make sure you feed her, just keep trying to get her to drink your breast milk from the bottle so she get use to it, evenually she shuld get it.

She may not like the nipple on the bottles you are trying to give her. Or it may just be the formula. If she is still nursing then at least she is still eating. Sometimes it is difficult to get infants to to use bottles or find a formula they will happily take. If you haven’t gone to a dr yet, try a breast pump and put that milk in the bottle and see if the infant will take it. If they will, then it is just the formula. If they won’t, then it is probably the nipple on the bottle. I’m not a dr, that is just my personal opinion and I worked at a daycare for a few years and those were some of the explanations and all that I heard while working there.

Most likely no, your baby doesn’t have the mental capacity to neglect nutrition. What maybe the problem is forcing her to drink from the bottle, if there is any sort of pushing involved into getting her to drink from it, most likely she won’t do it. Try just having the bottle at the edge of her mouth and let a bit of the liquid drip onto her lips so she can taste it. if she likes the taste more likely she will accept the bottle. Just giver her time for it, in the end eventually she will learn to accept the bottle.

Also other things are in factor when feeding a baby with a bottle, such as if shes comfortable enough to suck away at it. If the bottle is to big for her mouth then thats another thing. Any foul odors from the bottle that can only be detected when really close to the bottle (this happened to me before when I was giving my lil sis a bottle) If she is actually hungry at the time of feeding.

Nonetheless try to make an attempt to feed her with the bottle.

You should really get medical help if your worried your baby might starve you should take serious action.

Answer #6

Haha, yes thats another possibility, well heres something you can try. Get some of your breast milk, and then buy several other formulas and use the one that closely matches up to the taste of your breast milk. Be warned this can be quite a money consuming task, but if its for the baby. what the heck right?
