Why do people in other religions celebrate CHRISTmas?

Isn’t christmas all about jesus in the christian faith. So why do people of other religions or no religions at all celebrate the occasion and is it right. The jesus aspect of christmas is somewhat forgotten as it’s more about presents, in my opinion. What are your opinions on this topic?

Answer #1

Actually, because of the movements of the stars some scientists claim that Jesus would have been born around february.

Answer #2

Why not?

Answer #3

…because it’s a fun part of the culture, regardless of its origin.

its been about greed and money for a while now but christians do still celebrate jesus but for other people who dont beleive in jesus, like me. its a day to spend time with your family, eat a christmas dinner, have a christmas tree, get photos with the non existant santa clause and of course, getting and giving pressents and theres nothing wrong with that

I agree with pwincess_irenemarie.

Christmas for me is about family time, presents and parties… Not no Jesus. But I am an atheist. My mom is Hindu. And my dad is roman-catholic… Nobody in my family no matter what their religion is celebrates Christmas because of Jesus.

While Christmas may be an event about Jesus, for people of the Christian faith. It isn’t for everyone. I don’t even think it should be about religion personally. On Christmas day all that concerns me is spending time with my family… =]

Answer #9

Isn’t Christmas all about Jesus in the christian faith.

No… December 25th was originally a Pagan holiday that Christianity STOLE. Jesus wasn’t actually born on that day. In fact, most of the common Xmas symbolism and rituals are Pagan:

wreaths decorating a tree egg nog kissing under the mistletoe Santa Claus reindeer elves yule logs

…ALL PAGAN.

So why do people of other religions or no religions at all celebrate the occasion

Like I said before; it wasn’t a Christian holiday to begin with. Do some research.

Christmas has different meaning for everyone. Many people celebrate it as the birth of Jesus Christ. Many people celebebrate it for Santa Claus. Others just find it as a time of year to be with family and friends and to celebrate life and the good things they have been blessed with or earned.

Answer #11

That’s an interesting question which I have thought about also. It actually is a pagan holiday but in modern times it is meant to represent the birth of the Christian Jesus (son of God) however some people in other religions (like Islam) who see Jesus as a prophet and not the son of God will celebrate it for that reason (not all people just some). It has to do with the culture of the country as well, in Australia Christmas is for presents and Santa, religion isn’t really apart of it. If you ask a 5 year old or even 10 year old what is Christmas the answer will be along the lines of presents and lollies, just like Easter is for chocolate eggs and bunnies.

This Tim Minchin song describes how I feel about Christmas beautifully: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCNvZqpa-7Q&feature=player_embedded

Answer #15

Yes, jelly, Christmas is STILL ALL about Jesus, Our Lord God and Savior!

Did you read any of this thread?

Answer #16

Eh Jesus Was NOT born on december 25th The Bible does not say that ! it says he was born around september . Christmas is a pegean holiday they just made it up! You should look up the origin !

Answer #17

Well, Christmas is probably more about family and gathering and santa claus NOW more so than anything to do with Jesus Christ.

The catholic church kinda jacked the idea from the pagans in the first place so its been quite a tradition even before its religious affiliations.

Answer #18

No, it was never about Jesus, not truly. It was Winter Solstices, a pagan holiday. In which they celebrated the goddess decent into the underworld(NOTE: underworld is NOT hell) and the sun god’s rebirth from laying dead for 3 days. Notice the sun between dec 21-23 seems to stay still in the sky. Afterwards it seems to continue on it’s “journey”. This is how the story of the god laying dead for 3 days then arising arose. They celebrated through rituals, “merry making”. The idea of a pagan myth. Mistletoe, fern trees being decorated, “Christmas” lights(originally being candles), even Santa. Nearly all your Christmas “traditions” came from the pagan celebrations of Winter Solstice. In the bible, it is clear Jesus wasn’t born in the winter, but round the spring tie, hence shepards were out in the fields. The original celebration of Jesus was on January 6th. Way back when, one of the Popes deliberately placed the celebration of Jesus’ birth on a pagan holiday in order to get more people to convert. The same with Jesus’ Death. It was placed on the pagan holiday Ostria(sp?), which was the fertility Goddess. Ever wonder where the coloring of eggs, or the Easter bunny came from? Surprise!

Merry Winter Solstice 1_~
