Why do dogs turn around three times before lying down?

There’s a reason for everything. What about this one? Does anyone know or want to take a guess? The question again: why do dogs turn around three times before lying down?

The popular theory is that this is a holdover trait from before dogs were domesticated animals. Sleeping out in the wild, they’d spin to flatten the vegetation around them before lying down. Makes sense in the wild, but looks silly on carpet.

Its a territory thing or a least that’s what I hear. And not all dogs do it.
