Contributing factor is definitely the quality of education being taught - discipline.
I don’t think it really has much to do with your heritage, but your study/work ethic.
Most Asian parents tend to over-emphasize the importance of education to their kids, and they go a long way to make sure that their kids excel in school, sometimes to the point of forcing them to do so.
When I was a kid, I always had tuition classes with a private tutor a few days a week after school. And I also remember being caned with a bamboo rattan cane by my mother if I didn’t study/memorize the math multiplication chart.
I went to a public school, and the homework level was ok I guess. However, I noticed that the Chinese schools had an insane level of homework that is meant to keep you busy studying throughout the day after school, and then the cycle begins all over again the next day in school. Most Asian schools still punish students for not completing homework or anything of that sort. We get ears pulled, humiliation squats, caning, and other kinds of punishments. ‘Detention’ didn’t exist in schools then, but it may be more in use now.
So really, being ‘smart’ is not exactly purely genetics, anyone can excel in school if they really put a lot of effort into it.
Ok. First of all, that’s just a stereotype, however true it may seem. As someone already said, it’s not genetics/race, it’s WORK ETHIC and DISCIPLINE. Anyone who tries really hard and has good discipline, Asian or not, can excel academically. Oh, and to the person who talked about lack of privliges…WTF?! That, my friend is a racist comment! I am Asian-American, taking 2 early-placement classes at a local Community College, AND consider myself to be VERY privliged, especially in the ways mentioned! In fact, many of my Asian friends are similar to me in situation!
im from the philippines… discipline is the key, and also teachers in our country are way too strict you cant even talk to your classmate when class is going on, lets just include this one even when you have long nails or so you will be scolded and punishment for that is you have to sit on the air for the whole period… much more on studies its more likely a struggle or challenge for students here because of strick compliance, but its worth it… lets say subjects math, filipino, science, english, social studies, religion, physical education and some more… huhuhu…
It’s the competition in Asia that makes the parents want their child to excel in school just because they have a cummunist government and want their child to have a good reputation
im half-pilipino and count myself as asian because I had lived in the philippines for quite long time :] so why are asians smarter? we study a lot..like a lot, lot.
lol,, im not that smartt,, and im a Flip- it’s just basicly discipline.
your parents and teachers pushes you realll hard..
part of the reason is because they are more disciplined than us.and also because they might not have the same privileges as us like tv computer or whatever.
Not all Asians are smart. Come to Thailand, and there’s loads of dropouts here. The Asians in America are smart maybe because their parents are extremely strict, or maybe they came to America because they know they’re smart in their hometown and want to do something challenging. I’m Thai/Chinese/Taiwanese, and I am clearly not smart. I hate maths. (:
uhm, I don’t study lol
well, I would say Asians are generaly smarter because they are forced to study for unsightly hours, their test scores are diplayed on the wall in plain sight of everyone, so If u are at the bottom or near bottom of the list it “encourages” kids to do better and save them from the redicule of thier peers.
