Exchange students, smarter?

So, at lunch today me and my friends were talking to two foreign exchange students. We asked them what grade they were in America, and they said 12th, and then we asked what grade they were in Germany and they said tenth. They are taking higher classes than we are. But I think younger than us.. In there country they take the classes we take in ninth grade. Why is that? I know it doesn’t necessarily make them smarter than us, but it kind of seems like it..

Good question… back in the day we learned addition in kintergarten in the US, too. The theory of education here now seems to be: teach at the level of the lowest learner. Most of the kids I knew that dropped out of school weren’t stupid, they just got soo bored repeating the same lessons over and over and waiting for the rest of the class to catch up to where they were. Also, sometimes teachers resent brilliant students. Other times they want to help the exeptional student shine, but have to make efforts with that student after school.

I really like this question, why not take it to your school administrators and see what their excuse is?

it’s like my country, indonesia! - my cousins who live there start learning addition and subtraction in kindergarden… while here in canada I started learning all that in gr.1-2! my gawww… my cousins in indonesia were able to know their 1 timetable to 12 time tables in like grade 2!!… and I was still struggling with them in gr.5!! yeaaa… it’s weird! it’s just that different countries have different criculims! and teach in different methods and styles!
