Is it possible to get a sprain and a strain at the same time?

I sprained my knee in May and recently went to an orthropedist because I still couldn’t bend my knee, and trying to do so was very painful. After having an MRI to see if the ligament was torn (which it wasn’t) he tried something else and said that I had pulled my hamstring, and that I would benefit from physical therepy. My question is how did I strain it? Is it possible to do both at the same time and if so, does walking around on it make the injury harder to heal (is that why it still hurts?) Or did I do this after I sprained my knee?

If I remember from my Anatomy & Physiology classes from way back. A sprain refers to a ligament injury and a strain refers to a muscle injury. As to WHEN your injuries occurred, well who knows. Sure it’s possible to have both at the same time since ligament and muscle are connected to each other, but it’s also possible that you injured the muscle in your leg from over compensating for you knee injury. There are many possibilities. But as with all those types of things Physical therapy is always a good place to start to build up lost muscle and also to build up the supporting muscles around the injury. Hope this answers your question. Good luck to you!
