What's the difference between guns and needles?

So what’s the difference between getting your ear pierced with a gun (like at Wal-Mart) and getting it pierced with a needle (tattoo parlor)? A friend once told me that getting your cartilage pierced with a gun shatters your cartilage, and a needle doesn’t. Is that true?

The main difference, besides the appearance and the mechanics, is that getting a piercing with a needle is much more sanitary. I got my cartilage pierced like 12 years ago with a gun and it didn’t shatter anything that I noticed. However, I just got my conch pierced Saturday with a needle at a tattoo and piercing studio and the piercer told me that anytime you get your cartilage pierced that it does in a sense crack the entire area, she told me she was rubbing it to sorta help ‘smoosh’ it back together. Pretty weird and a little alarming, yes, but I guess it really isn’t a big deal.
