What is the basic personality of an austrailian shepherd?
my family and I have decided to get another dog, and they left the choice up to me. I’ve been looking around and the austrailian shepherd has really seemed like a good idea to me, but all the comments about them are different. really I’m looking for a medium sized dog that is loving, good with strangers and other dogs, and also “clingy”. is the austrailian shepherd like that? if not, what other recoendations does anyone have? ~em <3
Here is a great site for offering up the good, the bad and the ugly of every purebred dog…
Aussie’s are a herding breed…so need a LOT of activity, both physical and mental to stay happy (or they will find own entertainment)…

It all depends on how well you train the dogs. austrailian shepherds are ussally good and easy to train and nice to both people and dogs. One thing to keep in mind is that these dogs were orginally train to herd sheep and I have seen take that to a higher level because they will sometimes run around in circles around people.
Aussies are working dogs. They are hearders by nature. So if you get one, be prepared to excersice it EVERY DAY. My sister has one, and shes a handful. She is protective and sweet, but if she is not stimulated and played with every day, she will tear the house up. If you are looking for a dog that’s a little less maintenence, try a Boston terrier. It sounds like it fits the profile that you are looking for. Google the breed and read about them… even check out the youtube videos on them, I think you will fall in love. They dont shed much, and are people loving dogs. They also require excercise, but not as much as an Aussie… Aussies shed a lot too. Bostons do not require grooming. Good luck!
