Teenage angst?

What does that even mean? My mom says I have teenage angst, just to cover up the fact that I do have depression. Why must she cover it up with that word? She makes it sound like everyone has had severe depression when they were a kid, is that jsut a natural instinct of mothers?

Answer #1

Like here2help said, it is hard for mothers to acknowledge their kids have issues and need help (my mother was the exact same way). It’s easier to say it’s just a phase they’ll get over, because it means it wont last… Also makes them feel less guilty…

I think she covers up the fact that your depressed from herself because she doesn’t want her “little girl” to feel this way. She loves you and doesn’t want it to be true, so she is probably denying it. My Mom is like that too when I have those feelings of being depressed… like she ignores I said it, changes the subject, or she says something like your mother did.

Hope I helped. Good Luck!
