How exactly do you steer when you sit at the back, when canoeing?

My boyfriend and I went canoeing, and they told us that the person at the back is in charge of steering. We ended up going in circles.

Answer #1

by paddling harder/faster you push the canoe in one direction or another or you can drag your paddle

Answer #2

J stroke!

Answer #3

What’s that?

Answer #4

when both paddling the person that has the stronger stroke will apply the direction, the person at the back uses the oar as a rudder to further help with steering the canoe.
