Safe to cut my puppy's nails at home?

Hi is it Safe to have someone in my family while I hold my puppie cut her nails less then even a week she was stilling leaveing marks from her nails I’ve heard it’s ok but I’ve also heard bad idea cause part of her vain or something could be cut she could have a lot or some blood be in pain

Answer #1

It’s very difficult to cut a dogs nails as it is often hard to see where they end, so make sure you’ve had someone teach you how to do it before attempting to do so yourself

Answer #2

Use an emory board, on a puppy…the nail is soft enough and small enough, to just file it…Also, by using a file instead, there is no chance of getting into the “quick”…that’s what bleeds…and it hurts…

If you cut the vain it will be painful to stop the bleeding all you need to do isstick it in any type of flour otherwise its safe

Answer #4

I cut my cats nails all the time so it can be done at home, but I had her foster mom show me how. I suggest for the first time you may want to call up your vet and have them show you (yeah cutting at the vein is very painful for the dog)

Answer #5

yes its true that its going to be painful for da dog if you dont cut it right you could take your pupppy to da vet its only what 5 0r 3 d0llarz 0r somtimes may be free

Answer #6

It is probably worth taking her to the vet and asking them to show you how to do it the first time. It is definitely something that you can do at home, but it’s good to have someone show you what to look for to be careful of cutting too far if you haven’t done it before.

Get some styptic powder or gel to stop any bleeding just in case. Cutting too far does happen once in a while so it’s good to be prepared.

Answer #7

My dog has black nails so I just make sure that I don’t cut too far. But if your pups nails are clearish, then you can normally see where the vein part starts. Thats where you don’t want to cut, if you do hit a vein then have some of that clotting powder handy and it should be fine.
