Why does schizophrenia show up so late in life and are males or females more likely to get it?

Answer #1

The age of first onset of schizophrenia is around 5 to 6 years earlier in males, than in females, when measured across the whole population. However, when married individuals are excluded from the analysis, the age difference disappears. . However, I hesitate to suggest that being married tends to drive a man mental. . http://funadvice.com/r/14tdrhba6ll .

Answer #8

Schitzophrenia is often due to a malfunction in brain metabolism.

As far as I know, abuse of some illegal substances (hashish for example) can cause latent schitzophrenia to appear that otherwise would maybe remain latent. Young adults and teenagers often do experiment with such substances.

Answer #10

I don’t really see how late teens to early 20s is late? And I have never heard of it being caused by a malfunction of the brain’s metabolism. It generally is triggered by extreme stressors, which increase during that period (children are leaving home, getting jobs, getting involved in serious relationships, etc). It occurs almost 1.5 times more in males than in females.
