Odd! I can't find a reference to agree this one. "Santa Claus" entered the English Language late 18th century (New York Gazette, no less!) probably Dutch origin. He's worn a red coat since a 20th century Coke campaign captured the popular imagination, The associations with the devil are positive, legend has it that his purity upset the devil but St Nicholas (not the same as 'Old Nick'!) overturned the resulting mischief. Hence in Austria, Slovenia and some other countries, St Nicholas is always accompanied by an angel and a minor devil (called a krampus) during the festivities, but only a few countries call him Santa. The angel-and-devil bit is of mediaeval origin based on a belief that God assigned everyone a personal angel, but the devil only assigned little devils to people he hoped to ensnare. The play by Marlowe, Dr Faustus, reflects the mediaeval world as Marlowe (and the writer of the earlier German story it's based on) witnessed it. Faustus regularly finds himself hearing advice from his personal angel and devil (as well as from Mephistopheles and Lucifer), just as in Tom and Jerry and many movies.
