What age should my rottweiler pup go on to adult food?

Protein isnt what causes hip dysplasia and other bone deformities. They are actually caused by calcium to phosphorous ratios in food. You do not need to worry about getting lower protein food. That is old information that has since been proven wrong. First you want to make sure the puppy food you are feeding has a levels like this : calcium: 1.5% phosphorous 0.9%

Protein levels should be 25% or higher. You can feed an adult food now if it has these levels, because these are safe guidelines for puppies. I’ve been researching dog nutrition for almost a year now(unemployed). Its sort of a hobby of mine. One of the best sites I have found to get some good info is dogster.com and if you want to learn more about what dog food brands are actually healthy read this thread: http://www.dogster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition/thread/518898

Go to the bottom of the first post and you will find a list of food brands that are actually safe to feed your dog. Most foods that you see on commercials and actually most foods carried at petco and petsmart have preservatives in them that are cancer causing. Though they each have a couple of good brands you can buy its better to find a small business type pete store, they usually have better brands of food. You can google pet stores in your area to find better brands.

Sorry if I went over board. lol. I just like to make sure epeople are feeding their dogs a healthy diet because I didnt know wnything about this when my malamute mix was a puppy and she had bone deformities in her back legs that may have actually been caused by a lower protein diet in her younger months.

I’d say about 4 months. Rotties are big dogs, with the possibility of hip displasia and other bone and joint problems in it’s future. Adult food is lower in protien, than puppy food, slowing the rate of growth…It doesn’t make them smaller, just keep them from getting too big too fast (which is very hard on soft joints)…Ask any Vet…they’ll tell you, to feed either “large puppy” food, or put them on an “all life stage” food right after they start losing their puppy teeth (that’s 16 weeks)…

It’s considered standard to move from puppy food to adult food at the age of 1 year.
