You do not need to replace hamster cages for the lifespan of your hamster, unless they become broken or really worn. As long as you clean the cage regularly with a good animal disinfectant then it should be fine. If the cage seems to be getting small for the hamster then you could invest in a new one, or just buy some tubing for it if it has places to attach them, as you can get little pods and small areas you can add on to your cage by connecting it with the tubes and that will add more space for your hamster.
Replace or clean?
You should clean it about once or twice a week...or as necessary.
You shouldn't have to replace the entire cage with a new one unless something is wrong with it. If it isn't broken or anything like that...it should be fine. Unless you just want to upgrade to a better cage, then that is up to you.
when I had my hamster I had to clean the cage out ATLEAST once a week, if not 2 or 3 so the smell wouldn't get bad.
