How did people keep their food frozen/cold before refrigerators/freezers were around?

i’d say they got a box and filled it with ice sorta like a cooler.

mostly they salted and stored meat and fish so there was never much cold with the foods lol

hmm, in some places where there was a lot of cold weather & snow, they would bury things in the backyard like meats & dairy or under ground because it is always colder underground! (my mother told me stories about that when she was a girl living in the Ukraine…(aka Russia or USSR in 1948) so they would dig a hole in the ground cover the stuff well & place it under the ground while it was covered with snow…kept fresh & they were able to survive the bitter cold!
