What is that nasty yellow-green stuff that you cough up when your sick?

I know its called phlegm but I want to know what it is made of and why its there.

Basically, it’s excess mucus in your respiratory tract. It’s made up of dead cells and mucus secretions, and your body is trying to get rid of it through celiary movement. Just let it happen, as gross as it is.

easier version: your snot that you suck in through your nose drains down into your throat– and then it kinda juststicks there so you have to cough it up to et rid of it. loogi i think r somethin like that i dunno how to spell it..

That would be mucus. Mucus is a second line of defence for the body, when pathogens and germs enter in. The job of mucus is to collect all these pathogens and dirt so that you do not get ill.

Mucus. It’s a secretion made by mucus cells, it’s basically enzymes, proteins and glycoproteins. Oh and some of it may have travelled down through the nose, but the lungs also create mucus and when you get sick a lot of the mucus is coming from the lungs.
