Answer #3

According to stats in US xtians lie, divorce, murder etc at the same rate than non xtians!!! As an x-xtian my only realistic explanation for this is: Religious people do sins knowingly, but they have a backup system to get rid of the guilt, PRAYER! So why worry next time, just pray again!

I DONT think there is even ONE good deed that can only be done by a xtian, I saw them all, one as corrupt as the other! Pastors running away with church members wifes and staying in houses value $3-5 mil, not feeling a bit guilty while church members dont even have the bare essentials!!! He wont sell his house to provide a house for atleast 10 church members family’s nah, collecting, collecting!

So maybe you can say that the only good deed a Christian to do is asking Jesus into their hearts…and that is a good deed for themselves.

Selfish wont you say Mister???

Answer #4

Christians are no different than any other human being except for their beliefs. Any person can perform good deeds, Christians, Atheists, Buddhists, all of them.

Answer #5

But why? reminds me a bit of Christ’s temptation in the desert, when Satan challenged him to perform a miracle by making bread out of stones and prove his divinity. Why should should ‘proofs’ be necessary? If you want to believe, do. If not, fine.

Answer #6

good deed that can only be done by a Christian? Anybody can do any deed.

I’m a Christian, and I’m saying this.

What a lot of people don’t get is that if you’re speaking on the subject of going to heaven …you don’t get in according to your works! So maybe you can say that the only good deed a Christian to do is asking Jesus into their hearts…and that is a good deed for themselves.

Answer #7

Amblessed,

Anyone can present the ‘Good News’…

If you mean by ‘witness’: presenting a testimony, then how can that be objectively verified, and how is that a truly good deed?

How can “… relating your encounter with the King of Kings…” be objectively verified, and how is that a truly good deed?

How can “… relating to the saving knowledge of Jesus’ Christ…” be objectively verified, and how is that a truly good deed?

You said that it was simple…

Answer #8

The definition of lie…

  1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.

Lies are DELIBERATE with INTENT to deceive…therefore lying would not be a “good deed”…there is no such thing as “unwittingly telling a lie”…

Answer #9

Uh… Since I am atheist I would say walk into a church and yell out “I love you god” Or something similar. Anything else can be done the same since we are both human beings. We can help children, We can help people, We can inspire teach and help out.

Answer #10

Simple: Be a ‘witness’ to others and present to them the Good News, relating your encounter with the King of Kings, and the saving knowledge of ‘Jesus’ Christ !! Amen !!

Answer #11

Well so far. I can lie about presenting the deeds as an atheist. So you are shot down amblessed, Any atheist can lie on those things. So far the “Believers” are losing to an atheist. :/

Answer #12

Phrannie, that’s a good question… is lying a good deed… given that faith is not based on fact, what if people are unwittingly lying by claiming to believe in the “right” God…

Answer #13

Susila2,

If we would stop asking these questions, and if we would stop wondering what the consequences of our worldview has on the world, we would eventually achieve a deep mediocrity…

Imagine that Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Erasmus, Descartes, Kierkegaard or even Sartre would have said: why bother…

Mediocrity leads to human indignity and, ultimately; suffering…

That’s why…!

Answer #14

Also, it’s a moot point being as a ‘true’ atheist would care less anyway because it has to do with religion - having no ‘desire’ to discuss or play a ‘I got you’ game.

Answer #15

As for lying, It can be a good dead or a bad dead. You can lie to a young child when your husband or wife die as a parent and say “mommy went away for awile sweety” Until he is older. That can be a good thing for the child. While at the same time other lies can be bad. Also before you say “Christians dont lie” Dont we all lie to our children about santa, The easter bunny, Cupid and things of the assortment?

Answer #16

“truly” implies that the idea of goodness is objective. But it isn’t. So there are no “truly good” deeds.

But if we judge goodness by what is commonly considered good - outward actions that make the world a little more pleasant a place to live for the vast majority - then religion has little bearing.

Personally, I don’t consider “witnessing” to be good at all. It’s annoying as hell and leads to greater division.

Answer #17

I find it interesting that several people here seem to be suggesting that if a Christian ‘witnesses’ to someone and converts them to their religion, that’s a good deed, but if an Atheist did and said exactly the same things, with the same result, it wouldn’t be. How does that work?

Answer #18

uhm in your definition, you said “an intentional untruth”… which means a lie does not have to be intentional?
