'Lying' vs 'hiding the truth'

I think its morally wrong to lie but so is hiding the truth. Some of my friends disagree with me because ‘hiding the truth’ is totally a different thing altogather. Do you agree?

Whats your opinion on this?

Answer #1

One is a lie of submission - the other a lie of omission - both lies.

Answer #2

Very well said “amblessed”

Answer #3

I think that a lie, is a lie, is a lie! Especially when it involves someone else. I am a firm believer in treating others the way you would want them to treat you. I am also a firm believer in Karma…she never forgets.

Answer #4

If I were at a store and went to check something out and the cashier charged less then the real price then I would not hide the truth. If I did I would consider myself a thief. Learned from experience;)

Answer #5

The only difference between them is that one you are telling a lie and the other is living a lie. if you are hiding the truth, you are living a lie. you may not be telling one upfront, but you have to go out of your way to keep the truth hidden

Answer #6

Lying is lying no matter what any one say but sumtimes it can protect you and be a lil helpful but no matter, it is still lying so why do it… Be real because it will come back and bite you in the long run…

Answer #7

There is a long continuum. When we swear in to testify at a court of law we promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth but nobody is expected to volunteer incriminating information they aren’t asked about and nobody is considered guilty of purgery if they give technically correct answers even if they are equivocal, evasive or misleading. We reallly don’t give the whole truth.

It is hard to say at what point something becomes a lie.

Is truth the ultimate virtue? If an assassin wished to kill a loved one and asked you where they were would you tell the truth or lie? If your significant other put on a few lbs and asked you if they looked fat would tell the truth or lie to spare their feelings? My dad is one of those individuals who is truthful to a fault. It is difficult for him to tell even little white lies. While truthfulness is an admirable trait sometimes it is the lesser evil to lie.

Answer #8

they are both lying but if I ever had to lie ( I only do it to hide someone from the truth) I’d hide them from the the truth b/c then I wouldn’t have to make up a stupid story, but I try not to lye. b/c it isn’t right.
