What kinds of things are required to become a psychiatrist, counselor, or a marriage counselor?

Well then, I guess according to Chris this is your lucky day. Now most of my knowledge in the field is based on the U.S. In Canada some things are similar and some things Im not sure about. I’ll give you a heads up when things might be different.

To become a psychiatrist you need to go to medical school. To get to medical school you generally have to have a certain number of years of college (between 2-4 depending on the school), have taken certain pre-requisite classes (unfortunately you probably didnt cover many of these courses in your current track), complete the MCAT (not needed in Qubec and Uni of Ontario, and possibly a few other schools), do the interview, etc. Most medical schools are 3-4 years. You then get matched and depending on your specialty (yours would be psychiatry) you spend the next 2-6 years completing residency. A counselor is a very broad term and thus it is impossible to state exactly what sort of education you’ll need. You’re looking at anything from a degree in social work, a masters in social work, a masters in mental health or marriage counseling, a psychology associate (basically a masters in psychology), certification in drug counseling, a phd in several areas of psychology, and even a branch of nursing. Generally after the education and internship you need to get licensed. For that you need several thousand hours of supervision.
